Atrial fibrillation following physostigmine.
The side effects of physostigmine, a tertiary amine anticholinesterase agent commonly used to treat postanaesthetic depression caused by a large number of drugs, are thought to be fairly mild. A case is reported in which atrial fibrillation followed a total dose of 2 mg of this drug to a patient who was slow in recovering from a general anaesthetic. The arrhythmia was self-limiting and required...
متن کاملSnakebite! Crotalinae Envenomation of a Man in Rhode Island.
The incidence of poisonous snakebites has regional variance. Health care providers' knowledge and comfort in treating these envenomated patients depends on the density of poisonous snakes in their environment, with practitioners in the southern U.S. typically treating more exposed patients than those in colder regions in the North. We present a rare case of a confirmed copperhead snakebite that...
متن کاملAtrial Tachycardias Following Atrial Fibrillation Ablation
One of the most important proarrhythmic complications after left atrial (LA) ablation is regular atrial tachycardia (AT) or flutter. Those tachycardias that occur after atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation can cause even more severe symptoms than those from the original arrhythmia prior to the index ablation procedure since they are often incessant and associated with rapid ventricular response. D...
متن کاملAtrial fibrillation cardioversion following acupuncture
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia and it is an independent risk for serious events. Acupuncture has been growing in popularity in the West, and there are reports of its benefits in treating AF. We report a 57-year-old man who was admitted after having an allergic reaction to amiodarone administered to treat paroxysmal AF with fast ventricular response. Cardioversion with in...
متن کاملAtrial fibrillation following electrical injury.
The development of atrial fibrillation in 2 patients, following an electrical shock is reported. One patient, with an underlying pre-excitation syndrome, had to be cardioverted due to rapid ventricular rate and hypotension. The other, with normal conduction, tolerated the arrhythmia well and atrial fibrillation reverted spontaneously after 24 hours.
